Melbourne - 1956 Olympic Games

First Post – 28 February 2013

In 1956 I was 15 years old and we could not afford to go to the Olympic Games.  However I could afford to buy one of the daily newspapers, “The Sun – News Pictorial”, which was the morning of version of the current newspaper, “The Herald-Sun” ("The Herald" was the afternoon version.)  I bought one for every day of the Games and still have them.

I wanted to scan some of the photos and present them here.  I emailed the editor of “The Herald-Sun”, asking for permission to use some of the photos, with appropriate acknowledgement, in this blog. This was more than a month ago and I haven’t had a reply. I presume I never will. Which is a pity because there are some interesting photos, but there are many other aspects in those newspapers from 57 years ago that will be interesting to discuss.

I intend to make this an ongoing entry and each time I post something new I will also give the date.

I do have some photos from the Olympic Games, courtesy of a friend – Andrew Lachowicz.  The photos were taken as 35 mm slides. Andrew asked me turn some of his slides into digital images and to “clean them up” and he was kind enough to allow me to use some of his ones on the Games.

The four stamps issued for the Games are mine. The two multi-coloured ones was the first time stamps in full colour were issued in Australia.

The Duke of Edinburgh opened the Games.  Notice in his visit to the Olympic Village the apparent lack of security - in his walk just a simple rope as separator!
